Staffing 5-Star Estimation

Written by Votive Support

Votive estimates your facility's 5-star staffing rating for the current submission quarter so you know where you stand before CMS publishes the official one. Votive's estimations are based on a number of factors, including:

  • Census

  • Turnover

  • Staffing data

  • Case-mix (resident acuity)

  • Historical data

Because it is an estimation, it can be off due to factors outside of Votive's control, such as:

  • National averages that CMS updates after the submission window closes

  • Fluctuations in resident acuity

  • Facility penalties applied by CMS

  • CMS data omissions, corrections, or publishing lag

  • Minor changes to CMS's statistical calculation methodology

Votive's 5-star staffing estimation gives facilities the best available overview of their 5-star rating before CMS publishes it.

Best Estimate

The top blue label is the most likely 5-star staffing rating for your facility this reporting period. It is based on all data available to Votive, historical trends for your facility, and projections for CMS inputs that aren't yet finalized.

Last Star Rating on Care Compare

The bottom grey 5-star staffing rating indicates the last star rating as reported on Care Compare. Note that due to CMS publishing timing, this rating may be behind the current reporting period.

Range

The range accounts for natural variation in two things: CMS's 5-star calculations and your facility's resident acuity (case-mix). Some data CMS uses in the final rating isn't fully available during the submission period, and acuity fluctuates quarter to quarter. The range shows where your rating is likely to land.

Minimum

The lower end of the range. Your rating is very unlikely to be below this.

Maximum

The upper end of the range. Your rating is very unlikely to be above this.
